Dopaminergic Therapy: COMPT inhibitors and role of NADH
Abstract
Dopaminergic therapy is the gold standard pharmacological treatment for Parkinson’s disease (PD) aiming to replace or mimic the effects of dopamine, a neurotransmitter crucial for motor control, which is deficient in PD. The most effective drug is levodopa, although its use often leads to a condition known as the “wearing-off” phenomenon. To manage this, levodopa is combined with other medications such as: COMT inhibitors, dopamine agonists, MAO-B inhibitors, and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH).
